Intent

At Langwith Bassett Junior Academy we want pupils to leave Year 6 with a secure understanding of the world around them. Through our carefully planned units of work pupils will be inspired and develop a curiosity about parts of the world that they don’t know a lot about. We want pupils to be fascinated and what to find out more about the world. Through learning about different cultures and communities we hope to improve pupils respect and tolerance of the world around them. Throughout our schemes of work pupils are encouraged to ask questions and look at similarities and differences between areas of the world.

As well as stand-alone Geography lessons we want pupils to be able to make links. For example a topic that they have learnt about in a geography lesson and what they have heard on the news.

Implementation

Geography is taught for 3 units per year and is taught half-termly to allow pupils to revisit and build on key geographical skills. Key concepts that were taught in KS1 are revisited again in KS2 to allow pupils to remember more. Links are made to a range of other subjects, including creating graphs in maths to show the children how geography links to other subjects.

Our units of work enable children to think like a geographer and a variety of teaching approaches are used to practice these key skills.Teachers' ongoing assessment is used to ensure that any misconceptions are addressed quickly and pupils have a secure understanding across all topics.

Geography is taught both inside and outside the classroom and all units have fieldwork elements for the children to complete. Pupils take part in educational visits to allow them to embed key geographical skills further.

Impact

We will know what pupils have learnt through ongoing formative and summative assessment completed throughout each unit of work. At the start and end of each unit of work, pupils will complete a concept map where they RAG rate key vocabulary and match up keywords and their definitions to see how their understanding has changed during the unit. These assessments will allow teachers to plan opportunities to revisit areas of the geography curriculum that children are not as confident in.

All geography learning is completed in a book. Children will present their work in a variety of ways, including tables, photos, graphs, videos and written work. Subject leaders will be able to see clear progression through the units of work and between year groups. Each class will have an online floorbook that will be added to throughout the year to show their geographical journey.

Pupil voice will be completed regularly to enable the subject lead to see areas of strength and development within geography teaching and learning.
