One of the most important things your child can do to promote their academic progress is also one of the simplest, going to school every day. By attending regularly, they are more likely to keep up with daily lessons and learning and to maximise their progress and attainment. They are also learning how to be a good citizen by participating in the academy community and learning valuable social skills.

Your commitment to their attendance will also send a message to your child that education is a priority for your family and that going to school every day is a critical part of educational success.

Absence from school due to illness

We do understand that there are some times where attendance is not possible for a variety of reasons but we really appreciate your support in ensuring your child attends whenever possible.

What to do if your child is ill.

It is school policy that you should inform the school office if your child is unwell and unable to come to school. A phone call should be made to the school office before 9am on each day of your child’s absence.

If we do not hear from you, we will contact you to determine the reason. If we are not informed of the reason of your child’s absence this will be recorded as an ‘unauthorised’ absence on their record. The Education Welfare officer contact parents/carers directly in cases of prolonged or unexplained absence. 

If your child’s absence falls below 90%, parents will be notified of the academy's concerns and a referral will be made to the Education Welfare Officer will be made.

Please note: Parents are asked to make all health appointments outside of school hours.

Absence from school due to term time holidays.

Please collect a form from the school office if you wish to apply for a term time holiday. Only absence for exceptional circumstances will be considered. Parents choosing to take children out of school for a term time holiday may be fined by Derbyshire Authority in line with Section 444 of The Education Act 1996
