Music

Intent

At Langwith Bassett Junior Academy our music curriculum inspires children to be creative, express themselves and work with others. Music develops children’s confidence in a range of ways. We hope that through learning about a wide range of musical genres including music from around the world, children will have a life-long love of music.

Our curriculum ensures that pupils have the opportunity to listen to a wide range of different music styles and ensures that they learn about important composers from the past and present. Children will have the opportunity to sing as well as play a range of tuned and untuned instruments. Children will also have the opportunity to compose their own music and explore how music can be made through music technology.

A key aspect of music is performance and we want children to be able to apply what they have learnt in music to others aspects of the curriculum. Throughout the curriculum there are opportunities for children to perform in groups, individually and to their peers and adults within the school community.

Implementation

Throughout our carefully planned units of work children will be able to practice fundamental skills including singing, listening, performance and evaluating. All children from KS1 onwards will have stand-alone music lessons weekly to enable them to practice these skills. In foundation stage, children will learn the beginnings of music, including singing nursery rhymes. There are areas specifically in provision for children to begin to make music and explore a range of instruments.

All children will take part in a weekly music assembly. This will allow key skills to be embedded and allow pupils to develop a further love for music. The assemblies will focus on children learning a bank of songs and children learning about different musical genres with a focus on listening and using specific musical terminology accurately.

All children have the opportunity to join a choir during the year. This is delivered at lunchtime to ensure that it is accessible to all. Last year the choir enjoyed performing Christmas songs for the residents at two local care homes.

All children in KS2 will have the opportunity to learn the ukulele. This is taught through the Wider Opportunities music partnership. Lessons are carefully planned and there is ongoing communication between the provider and the music lead to ensure that pupils are developing a range of musical skills.

Impact

Our curriculum allows key musical skills and terminology to be repeated throughout the units of work to ensure pupils remember. Teacher observation and questioning will allow teachers to see which pupils need additional support and who needs their learning extended further.
